Currently I am trying to achieve all gold medals for the medium difficulty. Each map is varied and challenging with multiple paths and strategies to the finish line.
Excite bike on crack. The visuals are great.
Bummers: You can’t save the replay you’ve been working on for hours.
Fun and Frustrating Rating:4 out of 5 stars This is a solid game. It is based on the online, 2D game of the same name. While a very fun game, it gets extremely challenging which could be a turnoff for some users. You can spend a long time trying to get over one awkwardly placed box. Sadly, the game limits you to 30 minutes max per level. At one point I struggle with an obstacle, and after 29 minutes of struggling I made it over, but couldn’t make it to the finish line in time.
The levels are filled with checkpoints so you never feel like you are forced to replay a lot of what you already did. Also, you can respawn with the press of a button, so you can have quick, repeated attempts on the tricky obstacles. Sadly, I feel like the harder levels get rid of what makes this game fun! The most fun I had was racing down the track, flipping. The good parts feel almost like a roller coaster. The difficult levels get rid of this feeling; instead you spend a long time trying to get over a crate.
Excite Bike 2009 Rating:5 out of 5 stars This is modernized Excite Bike except your bike never over-heats. I downloaded the demo yesterday and bought the full version first thing this morning. I cannot tell you enough how fun and awesome this game is. Fantastic!
Awesome Game Rating:4 out of 5 stars I’ve never played any Trials games before. I was a fan of Excitebike as a little kid though… I wanted something similar so I snatched this game up and was not disappointed. Trials HD is one of the bext XBOX Live Arcade games I’ve played. I think it’s overpriced at $15 however, it should be $10.
You start off by customizing your rider, which is fairly cool. Then you go on to play in a few different very fun modes, unlocking more courses and bikes along the way. The other reviews will tell you: the game is addictive and easy to pick up, but quickly becomes insanely hard.
I think there should have been more courses because the game is a bit slim in that regard. Then there could have been a more gradual progression to the truly painful difficulty. More courses with greater variety would have made this game much better. Most of the game is played in a series of warehouses where all of the trials take place. There should be a daredevil mode where you could make giant jumps over shark tanks, have casino jumps, canyons, and stuff like that. Also there should have been Excitebike-style races.
Ultimately the lack of content makes it hard to see it being worth $15, but it’s as much fun as you will have with an XBLA game.
Master the Rear Wheel and you’ve got it! Rating:5 out of 5 stars This game starts out pretty innocent. Totally awesome graphics, effects, controls, and just plain fun. Pretty soon though, it gets very hard. About midway through the Medium levels, you realize how hard this game is, and once you get midway through hard you may just throw your controller. WAIT – don’t! While this game is hard, it is very easy to practice over and over. By pressing the B button, you are instantly put back on two wheels at the last check point. (Or press Select to start the level over). You could knock down over 50 attempts in about a minute or two until you get it right, and then the next checkpoint is just over that bump. Still wanna throw your controller? WAIT – don’t! This game turns out to be all about the rear wheel. If you can master when to apply your rear wheel to the ground, you will have a much easier time getting through the levels… still hard, but easier. You can’t accelerate if your rear wheel is off the ground, so the longer your rear wheel is on the ground the faster you’ll go!
After you pass some of the harder levels, press Y to see the leaderboards, and then check out the replays from the #1 slots. Keep a close eye on the rear wheel action, I’ve learned a lot by watching what others do.
Another tip: Leaning one way then the other can result in some serious instabillity (true to physics) so be careful not to overcompensate!
Easy to learn, difficult to master. Rating:4 out of 5 stars At its core, Trials HD is an experiment in physics, wrapped up in a motorbike package. Given only the ability to balance, accelerate and brake, the rider is given the task of conquering increasingly difficult tracks. When it works, it’s a blast. Your rider will be rocketing down steep hills and flying off incredible ramps, escaping failure by the skin of his teeth. More often than not, especially as the game progresses, your rider will be hung up trying to conquer just one small area of the race… over, and over, and over again…
Trials HD has a ton of re-playability though, in the form of ’skills’ ie. skiing mini games, fire hoops, broken bone challenges, etc. You can replay each track as many times as you like, and your friends scores are constantly posted, even following you along each track so you can see exactly how close you are to besting their best times. It’s a very compelling feature and something that will keep you playing ‘just one more race’ to try and beat your friends score, or your own. At times, its an exercise in patience more than anything, but it’s incredibly fulfilling to nail a track you’ve been practicing for hours. Easily worth $15.
Wow, so much fun and so simple to play! Rating:5 out of 5 stars If you have siblings, or friends that like to get together and laugh, this game is perfect. From the courses to the mini games this game is both uncomplicated and fun. It has simple controls, like forward, reverse, lean forward, lean back, and an occasional bailout button. My little brother has mastered the game, he is 13, and my not-so-good with video games girlfriend can hold her own and even set a few records. We sit and play this game, passing off the controller to one another, trying to beat each others scores or do the craziest crashes. Sense the rules of the game are simple, you can make up your own half the time.
There are 2 downfalls/challenges to the game. 1)The difficult tracks. They are really hard and you may find yourself thinking they are crazy if they think you should be able to do it. But, it always works out and you will feel good for doing what no one else figured out. 2)The violence. The blood is not often seen and in comparison to most games today it is not a lot. However, the crashes are often expansive and can leave your drivers falling long distances, hitting a lot of objects, being blown up, etc. and all while often making painful (I believe they are supposed to be comical) sounds. This is really up to the parent/individual to decide if this is appropriate.
All-in-all, this game is a blast! It is just old fashioned gamer fun. Side scrolling at it’s best. Hope this helps and I hope that you enjoy this game and have all the laughs my family and friends have had playing trials.
